Flashes and smoke rise from the steps of the Capitol building as chaos unfolds with supporters of US President Donald Trump storming the grounds in a bid to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden's win in the November election. Protesters were seen climbing the building, other confronting police officers standing guard in riot gear. The president-elect has denounced an "unprecedented assault" on US democracy.
