Why are farmers protesting against being allowed to sell to their own choice of private players? Part of the explanation could come from the government’s own data - farmers’ experience thus far of private players has been less than positive. In 2013, the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) surveyed a national representative sample of nearly 35,000 agricultural households to understand their landholdings, their income and expenditure on farming, their debt position, and who they sold their crop to and for how much. The data was released in 2016 and there have been no more recent surveys by the government into who farmers are selling their produce to. The data provides a unique insight into the selling practices of farmers, which is at the heart of today’s debate. Watch the video to find out more.
