The Trump administration has added four additional Chinese firms to its blacklist,...tightening the screw on Beijing.
Eum Ji-young has the details.
U.S. President Donald Trump is ramping up his hawkish actions against China.
His administration has added four more Chinese firms to its blacklist of companies allegedly owned or controlled by the Chinese military.
According to Reuters Thursday, the Pentagon included China's leading chipmaker SMIC and oil giant CNOOC on the blacklist.
With President Trump issuing an executive order last month, U.S. investors are restricted from purchasing securities of the blacklisted firms, starting next November.
China International Engineering Consulting Corporation and China Construction Technology were also added.
The new additions bring the number of Chinese firms on the list to 35, including telecoms giants Huawei, China Telecom, China Mobile and surveillance equipment maker Hikvision that were added earlier this year.
The Pentagon was mandated by law in 1999 to blacklist the companies in the "Communist Chinese Military Companies" but the list was only compiled this year.
Experts say Washington sees the blacklisted firms as significant for the modernization of China's armed forces.
They also say the move was likely intended to heighten tensions with Beijing ahead of the transition to the incoming Biden administration.
