South Korean researchers have developed a technique to more accurately measure greenhouse gas emissions at power stations and industrial sites.
Park Se-young has more.
Amid global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ...South Korea has been operating a successful emissions trading system.
Since astronomical amounts of money can change hands based on an increase or reduction of emissions, ...accuracy and fairness in calculation are very important.
This is why South Korean researchers have developed a technology to measure the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted from chimneys at power stations and industrial sites.
"Based on hydrometer measurements and uncertainty models that reach international standards, it quantitatively evaluates the measurement uncertainty of the actual emission output."
The researchers found that flow velocity in the chimney has the greatest influence on determining the discharge flow rate.
They increased their measurement accuracy by directly measuring the emission concentration and the flow rate.
The accuracy of the discharge flow rate is based on precise measurements of the chimney's diameter, pressure, temperature, moisture and flow rate.
The researchers have confirmed a three-point-eight percent uncertainty rate of discharge flow rate measurements on-site ...with a confidence level of 95 percent.
"With accurate measurement, we can think about how to reduce emissions, monitor the situation and develop more technologies."
The research team's joint study with the U.S. and China has been published in the online edition of the scientific journal Metrologia.
