During the fast of Karva Chauth, women who keep a fast listen to a mythological story. According to this legend, a moneylender had seven sons and a daughter named Karva. Once on the day of Karva Chauth, a fast was kept in the family of the moneylender. When everyone started eating at night, Karva's brothers asked him to eat as well but he refused. She said that she would eat only by offering argh to the moon. Since morning, the condition of a hungry-loving sister was not being seen by the brothers. For this reason, the youngest brother came away and lit a lamp on a peepal tree and said to his sister - break the fast and the moon has come out. The sister could not understand the cleverness of her brother and put her mouthful of food in the mouth. As soon as she ate the morsel she was informed of her husband's death. Due to grief, she sat for a year with her husband's body and collected the grass growing on her. The next year, when Kartik Krishna Chaturthi came again, she fasted with full statute to Karva Chauth Mata as a result of which her husband was alive. Since then, every Suhagin woman has been observing Karva Chauth's fast with complete rules.

करवा चौथ के व्रत के दौरान व्रत रखने वाली महिलाएं एक पौराणिक कथा सुनती हैं. इस कथा के अनुसार, एक साहूकार के सात बेटे थे और उसकी करवा नाम की एक बेटी भी थी. एक बार करवा चौथ के दिन साहूकार के परिवार में व्रत रखा गया. रात को जब सब भोजन करने लगे तो करवा के भाइयों ने उसे भी भोजन करने के लिए कहा लेकिन उसने मना कर दिया. उसने कहा कि वह चांद को अर्घ्य देकर ही भोजन करेगी. सुबह से भूखी -प्यासी बहन की हालत भाइयों से देखी नहीं जा रही थी. इस कारण सबसे छोटा भाई दूर एक पीपल के पेड़ पर एक दीप प्रज्वलित कर आया और अपनी बहन से बोला- व्रत तोड़ लो चांद निकल आया है. बहन अपने भाई की चतुराई को भांप नहीं पाई और उसने खाने का निवाला मुंह में रख लिया. जैसे ही उसने निवाला खाया उसे उसके पति की मृत्यु की सूचना मिली. दुख के कारण वह अपने पति के शव को लेकर एक साल तक बैठी रही और उसके ऊपर उगने वाली घास को इकट्ठा करती रही. अगले साल कार्तिक कृष्ण चतुर्थी फिर से आने पर उसने पूरे विधि-विधान के साथ करवा चौथ माता का व्रत किया जिसके फलस्वरूप उसका पति जीवित हो उठा. तभी से हर सुहागिन महिला करवा चौथ का व्रत पूर नियम के साथ रखती आ रही हैं.
