On 31 October 1984, two of Gandhi's Sikh bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, shot her with their service weapons in the garden of the prime minister's residence at 1 Safdarjung Road, New Delhi, allegedly in revenge for the Operation Bluestar.[ Beant Singh shot her three times using his side-arm; Satwant Singh fired 30 rounds. The men dropped their weapons and surrendered.

बेअंत और सतवंत को हाथ जोड़ते हुए इंदिरा ने कहा-नमस्ते. बेअंत सिंह ने अचानक अपने दाईं तरफ से .38 बोर की सरकारी रिवॉल्वर निकाली. इंदिरा गांधी पर एक गोली दाग दी. आसपास के लोग भौचक्के रह गए. सेकेंड के अंतर में बेअंत सिंह ने दो और गोलियां इंदिरा के पेट में उतार दीं. तीन गोलियों ने इंदिरा गांधी को जमीन पर झुका दिया. उनके मुंह से एक ही बात निकली-ये क्या कर रहे हो. बेअंत ने क्या जवाब दिया ये शायद किसी को नहीं पता.
