The Indian government Wednesday replaced a 34-year-old National Policy on Education, framed in 1986, with the New Education Policy of 2020. The NEP, approved by the union cabinet, makes sweeping reforms in school and higher education including teaching. Some of the biggest highlights of the NEP 2020 are,
* a single regulator for higher education institutions
*multiple entry and exit options in degree courses
* discontinuation of M Phil programmes
*low stakes board exams
*common entrance exams for universities.
The NEP puts focus on students’ mother tongue as the medium of instruction even as it sticks to the ‘three language formula’ but also mandates that no language would be imposed on anyone. The NEP only recommends the mother tongue as medium of instruction, and not make it compulsory.
The policy has squashed the 10+2 system and changed it to a 5+3+3+4, i.e., 5 years of primary education, 3 years of preparatory stage, 3 years of middle stage, and 4 years of secondary school. Examinations in this system will only be held for class 5th, 8th, and 12th. In this video we talks about the New Education Policy 2020: Advantages and disadvantages,What does the new policy mean for learners and India's education system?
A new NEP usually comes along every few decades. India has had three to date. The first came in 1968 and the second in 1986, under Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi respectively; the NEP of 1986 was revised in 1992 when P V Narasimha Rao was Prime Minister. The third is the NEP released Wednesday under the Prime Ministership of Narendra Modi.
