The Chancellor is set to announce new measures to protect millions of jobs in the months ahead, in the face of intense pressure from business leaders and trades unions.
The current furlough scheme which paid up to 80% of salaries is due to be phased out at the end of October.
Rishi Sunak is now said to be considering different forms of wage subsidy and is expected to announce more financial help. The Treasury also announced that there would be no autumn budget due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In Scotland there’s been an outbreak of coronavirus at Glasgow University, where more than 100 students are infected.
