Health officials across the U.S. have reportedly been notified by the CDC they should be ready to distribute coronavirus vaccine to healthcare workers and other high-priority groups as soon as November 1st... heightening fears that the agency is under pressure to approve a vaccine before Election Day.
Some scientists warn that granting emergency authorization to a vaccine before clinical trials are complete could pose safety dangers and inflame anti-vaccination sentiment - but others say that doing so could save thousands of lives.
Lee Kyung-eun has more on this story.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging health officials to be ready to distribute a COVID-19 vaccine,...within two months.
In a newsletter to state governors, the CDC has requested local governments to fast-track permits and licensing so that distribution facilities can be up and running by November first.
A series of planning documents were sent to state health agencies last week,..saying that two vaccine candidates will be ready by early November.
However, some critics are taking issues with the date, November first, as it is just two days before the U.S. presidential election.
They fear Trump is politicizing vaccine development to meet his promises.
"(And) we'll produce a vaccine before the end of the year, or maybe even sooner."
Others worry that the vaccines could be released before their safety and effectiveness has been being fully tested.
The World Health Organization raised similar concerns on Monday, saying that great care is needed.
"Each country has a sovereign right to define its policy for a vaccination or any other therapeutic intervention of its population. But they must be guided by the highest possible ethical standards, the highest possible scientific standards."
However, the U.S. government remains largely optimistic.
Over the past week, both White House health adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Stephen Hahn, the head of FDA have said a vaccine may be available for before the final clinical trial if the data is overwhelmingly positive.
The FDA is set to hold a meeting in the coming month to discuss the development and authorization of a vaccine.
