A nurse in Spring Lake, New Jersey, filmed herself rescuing and releasing a hummingbird her neighbour found entangled in spider web.

The filmer told Newsflare: "My neighbour phoned me in a panic this morning. She went on to explain that she found a beautiful baby bird with a large beak. My neighbour handed me a box with a female hummingbird inside.

"On assessment, I noted her left wing was immobile as well as her left foot. I can only assume that she became entangled in a spider web. Hummingbirds are so fragile and when they get tangled in a spider web it is usually a morbid outcome.

"I got some water and using my fingers I cleaned the spider web off of her wing and left foot. If you notice, she was holding a blade of grass in her left foot and was unable to open her foot as it had spider webs on it.

"I then attempted to feed her sugar water as hummingbirds have extremely high metabolisms and will die from hypoglycaemia. She wouldn’t drink probably because she was traumatised.

"I put her in a box and closed the lid, allowing for some air to get in. I read that placing an injured bird in a dark box for 15 minutes will allow them to rest and recover.

"I opened the box and gently placed her in my hand. She was alert and chirping! She expanded her wings and flew off! In the last part of the video you can see, she has recovered completely!"

This video was filmed on August 30.
