Govt to amend Drug Dependants Act to reduce prison overcrowding

The Home Ministry will amend the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 into the Drug and Substance Abuse Act to place drug addicts in National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) rehabilitation centres instead of prisons.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Mohamed Said told the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 25) that the move was to reduce congestion in prisons, which also house drug abuse prisoners.
