A video report made inside a Mexican Zoo has been shared on social networks to denounce the “total abandonment” and “deplorable conditions” of the establishment. The president of the Veracruz association for environmental awareness, Jose Gonzales, shared his report along with videos inside the zoo on Facebook to ask authorities to take action against the Miguel de Quevedo Zoo, located in the city of Veracruz, in the south-eastern Mexican state of the same name. The footage shows the activist going around the cages and describing the awful conditions the animals are living in. First, Gonzales comes across a llama which has an exposed wound on the side of its body where its wool is missing. Gonzales says: "Animals with skin lacerations, almost no food or water, locked in ridiculously small cages and rubbish everywhere.” According to Gonzales, in exclusive statements to Real Press, the zoo was partially closed during the country’s lockdown and shifts have been established every 15 days to clean the place and give the animals food. The association of Zoos, Hatchery, and Aquariums of Mexico (AZCARM) also presented a formal complaint on 5th August before the federal attorney for environmental protection (PROFEPA).
