The Indian Air Force's long-delayed plan to buy over 100 foreign-designed fighters has made little progress in the past two decades. The latest iteration of the plan came in April 2018, when the Indian Air Force formally launched a process to buy 114 fighters in a deal estimated to be worth around $15 billion. The Indian Air Force was also simultaneously negotiating with HAL to buy 83 units of the indigenously designed Tejas fighter at an estimated cost of $6 billion. The Indian Air Force had already ordered 40 Tejas jets from HAL.

लद्दाख में चीन के साथ बढ़ते तनाव को देखते हुए भारतीय वायुसेना में Light Combat Aircraft, यानी LCA तेजस का नया Squadron शामिल कर लिया गया है. तेजस विमान को भारत में ही हिंदुस्तान एयरोनॉटिक्स लिमिटेड यानी HAL ने बनाया है.तेजस का ढांचा, कार्बन फाइबर से बना हुआ है. जिसकी वजह से ये अन्य धातुओं से बनने वाले विमानों की तुलना में काफी हल्का होता है. इसका कुल वजन लगभग 6560 किलोग्राम है. ये विमान करीब 13 मीटर लंबा और करीब साढ़े चार मीटर ऊंचा है. हल्का होने की वजह से तेजस 50 हजार फीट तक की ऊंचाई पर उड़ान भर सकता है.
