Pandemic purgatory: priest keeps coronavirus vigil on Irish holy island

With Ireland in coronavirus lockdown limbo, Father Laurence Flynn has been the solitary inhabitant of Station Island in the middle of windswept Lough Derg. The Catholic island pilgrimage site, which dates back to the fifth century, is said to be where Christ showed St Patrick the entrance to purgatory. With the island unable to host pilgrims due to coronavirus restrictions Father Laurence "La" Flynn has stayed behind to perform the daily strenuous cycles of barefoot prayer usually undertaken by crowds of the faithful.
