Tiger Hill was held by elements of the Pakistan Army's Northern Light Infantry. In late May 1999, the 8th Battalion, Sikh Regiment (8 Sikh) had attempted an assault on Tiger Hill, but were repulsed by heavy small arms fire. Poorly coordinated further assaults initiated without adequate artillery support failed under fire from an entrenched enemy. Unable to press the attack, the soldiers dug in and surrounded the hill.

26 जुलाई को कारगिल युद्ध में भारत की विजय के 21 साल पूरे हो रहे हैं। 1999 में ऑपरेशन विजय के तहत करीब 18000 फीट की ऊंचाई पर कारगिल में पाकिस्तानियों के साथ लड़ाई लड़ी गई। इस जंग में 527 भारतीय जवान शहीद हुए थे, जिनमे से एक फरीदाबाद के बराड़ा के गांव कांसापुर में जन्मे मनजीत सिंह थे। ये कारगिल में शहीद होने वाले सबस कम उम्र के जवान थे। एक किसान गुरचरण सिंह के घर शहीद मनजीत सिंह का जन्म हुआ था। पिता के मुताबिक मनजीत सिंह पढ़ाई के समय से ही सेना में भर्ती होकर देश सेवा करना चाहते थे। मनजीत ने सेना में जाने के लिए अप्लाई किया और उनका चयन हो गया।
