Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador on Friday (July 17) welcomed the government’s move to increase penalties for those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in spite of calling for a deterrent punishment, such as a mandatory jail sentence.

The Cabinet has given its approval in principle to amend Sections 41 to 45 of the Road Transport Act which include increasing jail sentences for those causing death or injury due to drink driving, from 10 to 15 years and increasing fines up to RM100,000.
