Our presidential office correspondent Kim Min-ji reports.
President Moon Jae-in has highlighted the need for social dialogue and international cooperation to overcome the job crisis caused by COVID-19... in a way that reduces inequality and bridges disparities.
In a video message to the virtual global summit of the International Labor Organization on Wednesday,...
Moon said that all countries are working to control the outbreak and protect jobs at the same time stressing that it's not something an individual country or economic entity can address alone.
We depend on our neighbors to sustain our own lives. Humanity has evolved in the direction of more cooperation, and we have fulfilled each other’s needs through the division of labor. The crisis can be surmounted only when the international community chooses the path to mutual prosperity over the pursuit of individual interests.
Moon said that South Korea, as one of the first countries to be hit by the virus, has embarked on a path of mutual prosperity.
He introduced an agreement reached between workers, employers and the government to make joint efforts to retain employees instead of laying them off by making full use of reduced working hours and leave of absence schemes.
Moon also said that the country is focused on reducing inequality by expanding the coverage of employment insurance and introducing a Korean-style unemployment allowance.
He also vowed to ratify key labor conventions to improve the lives of workers.
South Korea has been steadily advancing towards a 'society that respects labor' based on the recognition that 'labor is the very foundation of society.' The country is determined to protect existing jobs and create new ones by embarking on a path to mutual prosperity. We will join international efforts to improve quality of life for workers, including through the ratification of key ILO conventions.
Moon also introduced plans to pursue a Korean New Deal in light of changes after the crisis.
It aims to create jobs that better meet future needs and embrace new values such as "digital" and "green."
The president will be unveiling a comprehensive plan, including signature projects and the scale of the budget,... next Monday.
