South Korea reported more than 50 new COVID-19 cases for the second day in a row today,... as concerns still linger over further cluster infections linked to a logistics center on the outskirts of Seoul.
The nation's health authorities say almost 90-percent of the community infections in the past week were from the metropolitan area.
Our Kim Jae-hee leads our coverage tonight.
South Korea has seen a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the Seoul metropolitan area lately,... after a cluster infection broke out at a Coupang distribution center in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do Province.
According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday,... 160 out of the 181 community infections from May 21st to May 27th came from the metropolitan area.
"In the past week, confirmed patients in the Seoul metropolitan area accounted for 88-point-4 percent of the community infections. The latest cluster infections started from clubs and bars, singing rooms, religious events, restaurants, workplaces or private academies."
All 58 new cases that South Korea reported on Friday were in the metropolitan area...20 in Seoul, another 20 in Gyeonggi-do Province, and 18 in Incheon.
Only three were imported cases and the rest were community transmissions.
The KCDC said a total of 102 confirmed cases have been linked to the Bucheon logistics center as of Friday noon.
Of those, 72 were Coupang employees and 30 were secondary infections.
The KCDC also said that the virus has been detected in equipment at the logistics center,... such as keyboards or computer mouses used in the workshop, or safety helmets which are shared by workers.
The KCDC raised the possibility that it may have been dead viruses that were detected,... but stressed the need to sterilize more thoroughly, as COVID-19 had been found even after the company implemented disinfection measures.
Meanwhile, cases linked to Itaewon clubs and bars in the nation had reached 266 as of Friday noon.
South Korea had a total of 11-thousand-402 cases by the end of Thursday,... and 2-hundred-69 deaths.
