Samsung Electronics is looking to expand its presence in the contract chip making sector by building a new foundry production line in the South Korean city of Pyeongtaek, just south of Seoul.
Jang Tae-hyun reports.
South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics has revealed plans to build a new foundry production line in Pyeongtaek.
This is in line with the company's goal to be the world's top logic chip maker by 2030... through an investment of some 108 billion U.S. dollars.
The new line will use a state-of-the-art Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography, or EUV process to produce high-end processor chips used for 5G, computers and artificial intelligence.
The newest production line in Pyeongtaek will be Samsung's seventh foundry production line, which can make chips designed by other companies.
Samsung Electronics says this will expand its presence in the contract chip making sector, currently dominated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.
According to a market tracker TrendForce, Samsung has roughly 16 percent of the share in the global foundry market in the first quarter of this year.
Samsung Electronics' Vice Chairman, Lee Jae-yong has said he believes that investment for the future should never stop.
"Just like our memory chips, we'll be number one in the semiconductor industry including foundries."
He also visited the company's semiconductor plant in Xian, China on Monday... to discuss measures to cope with decreasing demand due to the coronavirus pandemic.
And he said that Samsung will stay focused on its strengths... while still investing in other innovative industries.
