Thai locals are worshipping a misshapen pineapple because it resembled a Buddhist monk's talipot fan.

Footage shows the religious followers visiting the temple to admire and pray to the strange-looking fruit on May 6 in Yasothon, Thailand.

Temple caretaker Boon Seeda, 69, said he received the pineapple from a fruit vendor, but it has drawn attention because it look like a talipot fan that monks while saying prayers.

Boon said: "I was out receiving food offerings from the locals with the clergy then we walked passed a fruit pushcart and I saw it.

"I asked the seller about the fruit and was surprised after he told me it was a pineapple because I have never seen a pineapple or any fruit in this shape before.

"Then he told me to take it back to the temple because he thought it looked like the Buddhist monk's talipot fan and want the temple to keep it for the auspicious."

Talipot fans are handheld fans, originally made out of talipot palm leaves, used by Buddhist monks to cover their faces while chanting prayers and verses.
