Dozens of homes were damaged after a river of mud battered homes when a tropical storm caused flash floods in northern Thailand.

Rescue workers rushed to help locals from five affected villages after the muddy torrent swamped homes in Lampang province.

Noppaporn Tuikat, the district chief of the Sop Prap area, said the disaster was caused by continuous heavy rain storm that hit the area on Saturday (May 9) afternoon.

He said: "There were no reported injuries or deaths. The villagers will be given aid to help them rebuild their homes."

Tropical storms have been sweeping Thailand for the last few weeks as the country enters its scorching summer season with temperatures reaching 42C.

The strong winds and heavy rain, which are forecast to continue throughout May, causes havoc with the country's ageing infrastructure.
