President Moon Jae-in vowed to turn the COVID-19 crisis into an opportunity so that South Korea can take a leading role in the world.
During a special public address on Sunday to mark his third year in office, the South Korean leader stressed that although we cannot lower our guard yet,.... the government will use the relatively rapid stabilization phase as a turning point for enhancing economic vitality.
To that end, he vowed to turn the country into a digital powerhouse by fostering new growth industries pointing out that South Korea has strengths in post-COVID-19 related sectors, such as intact medical services and online education.
The President vowed to push ahead with a Korean version of the New Deal as a national project to create jobs calling it a preemptive investment for the future.
Moon also plans to improve the country's employment safety net by opening an era of universal employment insurance which everyone can benefit from.
While vowing to take the lead in an international order of solidarity and cooperation that prioritizes people's lives and safety, he also expressed hopes Seoul and Pyeongyang can also move toward a single community of life and peace.
