During the Port Elizabeth Test in November 2001, match referee Mike Denness called six Indian players for a hearing. Viru Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Deepdas Gupta, SS Das were fined/suspended for excessive appealing. Captain Ganguly was handed a one match suspended sentence for failing to control the team. Sachin was accused of ball tampering and handed a suspended ban for one Test Match. He accepted that he merely used his thumb to clean the grass off the seam. Generally umpires check the ball every 2–3 overs. Sachin told Denness to consult the umpires but Denness refused.
