COVID-19 is the disease caused by the new coronavirus. It's posed a unique challenge, given it has neither an effective vaccine nor treatment against it.
Now, UPI reports some influenza strains may trigger the same over-active immune system responses as COVID-19.
What's more, a new analysis suggests that same overactive response may be determined by how the body metabolizes sugar.
If true, the findings add to the similarities between the two highly contagious and sometimes life-threatening viruses.
Both are highly contagious and share many of the same basic symptoms, including cough, fever, and shortness of breath.
Those with underlying health conditions, including diabetes, are at higher risk for becoming seriously ill or dying from COVID-19.
