The latest figures mean Italy now has the highest number of confirmed infections outside China, where the outbreak originated in December. It has overtaken South Korea, where the total number of cases is nearing 7,400. Italy has one of the world's oldest populations. The virus is particularly dangerous for the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.

एहतियात के तौर पर इटली ने एक बड़े कदम का ऐलान करते हुए रविवार को अपनी एक तिहाई आबादी की आवाजाही पर रोक लगा दी. प्रधानमंत्री ग्यूसेप कोंते ने इस संवैधानिक आदेश पर हस्ताक्षर किया. इटली की आबादी लगभग 6 करोड़ है. इस आदेश के बाद इटली के लगभग 160 लाख लोगों की आवाजाही पर रोक लग गई है.
