Hikers have been filmed looking at lava coming from a crater in Mount Etna on Thursday (January 24).

Strong video captured by experienced volcano watcher Giuseppe Distefano shows an eruption and lava pouring from a crater.

Distefano told Newsflare: "The intracraterial Strombolian activity of the Voragine Crater (Centrale Crater) continues, accompanied by the emission of lava that is pouring into the adjacent Bocca Nuova crater. The eastern well of this crater (BN-2, also known as the Mouth of 1964) has been largely filled with lava.

"There are ash emissions from the Northeast Crater and the Southeast Crater. The climb to the volcano is very difficult due to the presence of ice along the walls. The type of summit eruption is not frequent for Etna and the dynamics of the facts is quite unique."
