Protesters resorted to burning government buses to show their opposition to the Citizen Amendment Act in northern India on December 19 in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.

Footage shows a bus on fire as police officials try to put out the flames with fire extinguishers.

Officers can be seen rushing through the scene as they try to chase away the protesters.

The road can be seen filled with debris including pieces of bricks and stones that had been thrown at the officials early in the day.

As prohibitory orders to avoid protests have been put up in various parts of the country, some groups are defying the orders.

According to reports, the Samajwadi Party took up to defying these orders and called for a protest against the Citizenship Act.

Protesters are being detained amid protest as Code of Criminal Procedure, section 144 was imposed in various states.

This section prohibits unlawful assemblies but upon violation of the code, police took up to detain protesters.
