Three jockeys fell off their horses in a series of shocking slips on a track in Bangalore (Bengaluru).
The accident occurred during a 1200m race organised by Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) in the southern Indian city on 15 November.
Jockey Suraj Narredu, riding Will To Win, looked set to clinch the contest but he fell in the final lap after his horse lost footing on the soft ground.
Jockeys Y S Srinath and Kiran Rai, who were right behind him, also lost control and fell to the ground.
While two of them managed to escape with just scrapes, Srinath had to be taken to a hospital with multiple bruises.
Will To Win also broke her leg and had to be euthanised.
With the three favourites out of the race, jockey Imtiaz Ali, riding the unfancied Naayab came first.
The result angered punters who had put their money on the favourites. They went on a rampage, vandalising betting counters before being dispersed by the police.
BTC officials have promised to inspect the track after several jockeys complained that it was soft in patches and not fit for riding.
