BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA — Air Protein says it has launched a meat substitute made of chemical compounds and other elements harvested from the air in a press release on Tuesday.
CNet reports that the faux meat utilizes carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen.
According to Air Protein, a proprietary technology converts the elements into a protein that contains the same amino acids found in animal meat.
The technology is developed from NASA's concept that recycles carbon dioxide from astronauts with microbes called hydrogenotrophs, which convert the gas into edible protein.
The company says the process is a sustainable food production alternative that helps to reduce the use of agricultural chemicals and stress on arable land.
