President Moon Jae-in's elderly mother passed away on Tuesday at the age of 92.
According to the top office Kang Han-ok... was suffering from a chronic illness and had been hospitalized in Busan, the president's hometown.
"President Moon, following the wish of his late mother, will hold a private funeral with family members only. The president has respectfully declined visits by mourners as well as condolence flowers."
The president was reportedly present when she passed away.
This is the first time in South Korean history that a sitting president's parent has died,.
In a social media message this morning, President Moon said he wants to hold a Catholic funeral with family members only,... with a three-day mourning period expected to follow.
He asked Blue House officials and politicians not to visit to pay their repects,... and continue to oversee state affairs instead.
Born in Hungnam district in North Korea before the Korean War,...Kang supported and raised her children by herself, following the death of her husband in 1978.
Moon had previously expressed hopes of visiting North Korea with his mother when the two Koreas reunified.
