THE ARCHBISHOP OF BRITAIN'S CANTERBURY VISITED AMRITSAR'S JALLIANWALA BAGH AND EXPRESSED DEEP REGRET AT THE MASSACRE THAT WAS PERPETRATED THERE A CENTURY AGO. HE PROSTRATED HIMSELF BEFORE THE WALL WHERE BULLET MARKS ARE STILL PRESERVED AS A GRIM MEMORY AND HOMAGE TO THE CIVILIANS WHO DIED THERE WHEN GENERAL DYER OPENED FIRE ON A PEACEFUL GATHERING BACK IN APRIL 1919. MOURNING THE TRAGEDY, THE ARCHBISHOP JUSTIN WELBY SAID THAT HE IS ASHAMED OF THE CRIME COMMITTED THERE. ON THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GRIM DAY, THE ARCHBISHOP HAD SAID THAT AS BRITISH PEOPLE WE CANNOT IGNORE THIS SHAMEFUL PART OF OUR COLONIAL LEGACY. HE SAID HE HAS NO STATUS TO APOLOGISE ON BEHALF OF THE UK OR ITS GOVT AND THAT HE IS PERSONALLY VERY SORRY FOR THE INCIDENT. THE UK GOVT SIGNIFICANTLY HAS NOT APOLOGISED FOR THE MASSACRE. FORMER PM THERESA MAY HAD SAID THAT SHE DEEPLY REGRETED THE MASSACRE ON THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DAY.
