The unexpected reason why Greece is painted white and blue

Greece is known for bright white walls and bold blue trimmings, but where did those colors originate? The history behind the color combination isn't what you'd think. In the 1930s, it was mandated that all buildings be painted with white lime as it was thought to have antibacterial properties. During the military dictatorship of 1967, it became a legal requirement for Greek houses to be painted blue and white.
