The Gujarat High Court on Monday, 9 October, commuted the death sentence of 11 convicts in the 2002 Godhra train burning case to life imprisonment. The court also ordered the state to pay Rs 10 lakh to the families of the victims who died in the carnage. It, however, upheld the death sentence of 20 other convicts.

The court also observed that the state government had failed to maintain law and order. "As far as law and order is concerned, HC has observed there has been a lapse on part of state government and railway authorities," the special prosecutor said.
