The fact that the air in the capital is more noxious than an airport smoking lounge, is not news anymore. The fact that the air in the capital is so noxious that it has started to take a visible toll on the lungs of those who breathe it, is appalling.
After nine days of being wrapped in toxic, cancerous haze, for the first time in many years, doctors in Delhi’s Safdarjung and Ram Manohar Lohia hospitals are seeing cases of chemical pneumonia – usually pneumonia is a bacterial disease but this is a condition where the lungs develop an inflammation after inhaling toxic fumes.
Sir Gangaram hospital reports a 60 percent spike in cases of asthma, lung disorders, eye and skin infections. Apollo says, its cases of pollution-related ailments has doubled in the last fortnight.
Clearly, Delhi is under an environmental siege – public and State concern should explode right now.
