A Majority of Americans
Want Undocumented Immigrants
to Legally Stay in the USA According to a new survey by the Pew Research
Center, 72 percent of Americans want there to be a
way for illegal immigrants to become legal residents. The survey, conducted from late July to early
August, found that only 1/4 of Americans
want all undocumented immigrants to be deported. 54 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning
independents agreed that there should be a way
for undocumented immigrants to legally remain. 90 percent of Democrats and Democratic-
leaning independents also support a legal
path for undocumented immigrants. In terms of policies on illegal immigration,
40 percent of Americans agree with Democratic
policies and 39 percent agree with Republicans. A drastic difference in beliefs between the
two parties is apparent in regards to the
humanitarian crisis at the US-Mexico border, as 71 percent of Democrats believe it’s important
to provide safe and sanitary conditions, while
only 32 percent of Republicans said the same. 65 percent of Republicans believe it is important to
reduce the number of immigrants coming to the USA
for asylum, compared to only 24% of Democrats.
