다나스 북상에 긴장…대비 강화
A tropical storm is heading north towards Korean waters and is expected to make landfall over the weekend.
While the impact on the nation would be relatively weak, Typhoon Danas is likely to bring heavy rain.
Oh Soo-young fills us in on what to expect.
Typhoon Danas is expected to hit the Korean Peninsula over the weekend,... bringing torrential rain to the southern regions.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said that the typhoon, as of Thursday afternoon, was moving northward from waters near Taipei towards Shanghai.
It is expected to make a landfall on Korea's Jeju-do Island on early Saturday.
Weather authorities expect the typhoon to move northeast, near the southern coastal city of Yeosu, and head into the East Sea on Sunday afternoon.
Danas developed in waters off the Philippines on Tuesday.
It is a relatively small typhoon with a maximum speed of 18 meters per second and central pressure of 996 hectopascals.
While the tropical storm is expected to affect the southern regions of Korea over the weekend,... the weather agency says Danas is likely to weaken further.
The main concern, however, is the potential damage from the heavy downpours,... on top of the country's seasonal monsoon rain.
Southern provinces and cities, including Jeju, Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do are preparing for the landfall, with authorities ramping up flood control systems and other key infrastructure in order to limit potential damage from the rain.
The weather agency says a more specific forecast of the typhoon's impact will be available on Friday morning.
