All of the power was restored late Saturday night in New York's Manhattan borough after a transformer explosion knocked out power to buildings, traffic lights, subway cars and Broadway theaters.
No deaths or injuries were reported due to the five-hour long blackout which darkened more than 73-thousand homes and businesses in a stretch of the city from West 42nd to West 72nd.

"We came back on the bus and noticed all the traffic lights were out as we were coming up and as we approached the apartment complex, we saw that there was a concentration of police cars and fire trucks around the apartment and they had roped off the transformer that's underneath the street right there, on the corner of the apartment."

The outage occurred 42 years to the day from a major 1970s blackout that sparked looting and rioting in America's most populous city.
