US tourists witnessed the eruption of a volcano on the Italian island of Stromboli yesterday (July 3).

The volcano erupted at around 4:30 pm local time sending a massive mushroom cloud into the atmosphere.

Islanders and tourists were soon evacuated from the island.

The filmer said: "There was a huge explosion, really, really loud.

"We were in awe for about a minute and a half.

"We didn't comprehend the massiveness."
