David Ortiz Was Not the
Intended Target in Shooting The Dominican Republic’s chief prosecutor
determined that Ortiz's friend, Sixto
David Fernandez, was the real target. Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez shared the latest news at a press conference on Wednesday. Police are still searching for Victor Hugo Gomez,
who ordered the hit on Fernandez. Fernandez shared a table with Ortiz
at a bar in Santo Domingo on June 9. The former Boston Red Sox star
was shot once in the lower back. The gunman, Rolfi Ferreira Cruz, confused
Ortiz for Fernandez, according to Rodriguez. Ortiz had surgery at a hospital in
the Dominican Republic and was
transported to a Boston hospital last week. Ortiz's condition was upgraded to
"good" by his doctors on Tuesday.
