Despite expectations that the leaders of Washington and Beijing will hold trade talks at the upcoming G20 summit in Japan, the U.S. Commerce Secretary has downplayed the prospect of a breakthrough.
Speaking to CNBC on Monday, Wilbur Ross said the G20 meeting is not a place where U.S. President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping can negotiate "a 2-thousand-5-hundred page" agreement.
However, he added that there could be some kind of agreement on the path forward.
Although Ross said the two sides will eventually make a trade deal, he emphasized that President Trump will impose additional tariffs if the fallout in talks continues.
