A "corvette" is a small, light, and maneuverable armed warship. It originally is supposed to be larger than a coastal patrol craft and slightly smaller than a sailboat. Almost all modern navies use ships smaller than sailboats for their coastal duty, but not all of them use the term corvette. The rank Corvette Captain comes from the name of this type of ship.

During the Age of Sail, corvettes were mainly assigned in coastal patrol, supporting large fleets, fighting in minor wars, or participating in show-the-flag missions. The British Navy began using small ships in the 1650s but called them as sloops rather than corvettes.

An Aerospatiale SN 601 Corvette was a French business jet of the early 1970s. It first flew on July 16, 1970 and was touted to result to selling six jets per month, but only got to selling 40 aircrafts in its six years. Because of such disappointing sales, the production line closed. Most of the Corvettes that were sold went to European regional airlines.

The Corvette had a traditional design for its class, it had a low-wing monoplane with twin turbofans that were mounted in nacelles mounted to the rear fuselage. The first prototype was powered by two 990-kg thrust Pratt & Whitney Canada Jt15D-1 turbofan engines.
