Dozens of mosques have been destroyed recently in China’s western Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, just as Muslims around the world were celebrating the end of the fasting month of Ramadan with early prayers and festivities. The vanishing places of worship are seen as a reflection of the growing pressure Chinese authorities have placed on Uygurs and other ethnic minorities in the region. (Photo: AFP)
