Eleven people died on Mount Everest this season, marred by chaos, overcrowding and fatal queues on freezing ridges of the mountain as a record numbers of climbers tried to summit. Returning climbers and mountaineering experts have criticised the government’s policy to dole out permits to anyone who forks up the $11,000 permit fee, opening doors to inexperienced climbers that risk themselves and others on the mountain.
