In his first ever Australian interview, Atarah chats to the AU before his Lollapalooza debut to discuss the New York music scene, and who influences him as an artist... “It’s not what it used to be,” Atarah admits, talking of his experiences as an artist in New York. “At one point, New York had such a strong music culture, I think we’ve kind of lost our way a little bit but hopefully that’s going to turn around.” Things are turning around indeed for the emerging rock artist, having just recently announced a residency at Pianos nightclub in New York. “Rock music is dying big time in New York… [it] used to be New York’s strong suit.” Through this residency, Atarah hopes to connect with other artists within his community.
Working closely with music producer Michael Malih, Atarah has just released his debut EP. Although this is Atarah’s first EP, he has previously worked with producers Mark Saunders and Damian Taylor, and states that their influences have shaped him as an artist: “It helped me take my raw elements and… smooth it into something that can hopefully break through the mainstream and take over the airwaves.”
For Atarah, his EP is a defining moment, he says: “This is the first time as an artist that I’m putting myself out there… the single [‘Break Free’] is about letting go of the bullshit, and doing what I want to do, and just being me. This is the truest form of who I am.” Surrounding Atarah is a handful of close friends whose support is much appreciated, “I’ve been super lucky to be around people who are amazing… but also awesome musicians. When we play live, we’re a band, and I want everyone to be able to express their musicianship.” Atarah is confident when asked what to expect from his set the next day, “Raw and energetic rock and roll… it’s going to be fucking great,” he says.
