Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer was the first European to set foot in 1643, but a hostile encounter with local Maori resulted in Europeans coming only after 1769 VI. It was then that James Cook mapped the entire coastline and opened the gateway, but during the 19th century, there were frequent altercations between Maori and the British VII. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, but Auckland is the largest city and the most ethnically diverse in the country too VIII. The national symbol of the country is a native flightless bird called 'KIWI', and New Zealanders affectionately are known as kiwis too IX.
