Maine Becomes First State
to Ban Styrofoam Governor Janet Mills signed
the bill into law on April 30. The law begins in 2021 and anyone who
breaks it will pay a penalty of $100. Besides styrofoam, plastic beverage stirrers have also been
issued a ban. The Natural Resources Council of Maine
says that styrofoam containers are one
of the country's most discarded items. In Maine alone, over 250 million items
that contain styrofoam are used annually. Maine Governor

split into smaller pieces, styrofoam
is tough to get rid of.
