More Young Girls Are Attempting Suicide by Poison Attempted suicide by poisoning among U.S. youth has more than doubled in the past 10 years. The attempts have more than tripled for young women and girls. Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and the Central Ohio Poison Center recorded the number of calls made to U.S. poison control between 2000-2018. Out of 1.6 million intentional poisonings, 1.16 million (71%) occurred in young women and girls. The results may reveal a connection between mental illness and the availability of prescription drugs.
