Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is located in the Western Ghats in Pathanamthitta District, Kerala. The temple is located 72 kms away from Pathanamthitta. The shrine, situated on a hilltop surrounded by dense forests and 18 other hills, stands about 1260m/4135ft above sea level. This famous temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, and is accessible only by foot. According to popular belief the temple is 4800-5000 years old.

Makaravilakku is the main event of this temple. On the day of Makaravilakku, lakhs of devotees throng around the temple for a glimpse of Makara Jyothi. Other than the pilgrim season, the temple remains closed during the rest of the year except for the first five days of every Malayalam month and during Vishu( April). East of the central shrine or 'sannidhanam'is Vavarnada',which commemorates Vavar, a Muslim associate Lord Ayyappa. Vavar, a muslim of great valour, and devotee of Lord Ayyappa, and his shrine visited by all pilgrims to Sabarimala. It is an epitome of religious harmony, prevailed in Kerala for ages. A devotee has to climb 18 holy gold steps to arrive at the sanidhanam for getting the "Punyadarshan" of Lord Ayyappa. Pilgrims chant the mantra "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" while ascending the steps and pray the lord to give their legs strength to climb the sacred steps.

Sabarimala is believed to be place where Lord Ayyappa meditated after killing the powerful demon, Mahishi. Sabarimala is considered to be one of the most visited pilgrim centres in the world 's second largest annual pilgrimage centre.
