House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been named the 2019 recipient of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been named the 2019 recipient of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.
The announcement was made Sunday in a press release issued by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.
"She will be recognized for putting the national interest above her party's interest to expand access to health care for all Americans and then, against a wave of political attacks, leading the effort to retake the majority and elect the most diverse Congress in our nation's history," the statement noted.
One of the presenters of the award will be the foundation's honorary president, former U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy, who said of Pelosi, in part: "She is the most important woman in American political history and is a true Profile in Courage."
In 2007, Pelosi became the first woman to be elected House Speaker, and she regained the position in 2019 after Democrats took back the House majority.
