The decision expands on a 2011 opinion that prohibited online gambling across state lines. The new ruling is expected to be challenged in court by states where online betting is legal or where lottery tickets are sold on the web.
In New Jersey alone, online casinos surpassed $1 billion last December after debuting back in November 2013. Gaming officials say the opinion's impact now rests on how seriously
the DoJ enforces it.
